18th Biennial Evergreen International Phage Biology Meeting

The 18th International Phage Biology Meeting at The Evergreen
State College was held August 9 through 13, 2009, exploring all
aspects of phage biology, genomics, ecology and applications. The
primary goal was to provide a strong opportunity for people from various
backgrounds, ages and places to build strong working relationships,
leading to new insights and collaborations. To this end, the meeting is
kept as inexpensive as possible, especially for students. The
Registration Form for that meeting is available as a PDF file and as a Word Document.

The early registration deadline in 2009 is May 1 and late registration deadline
is June 5; note that there is a substantial discount for early
registration. Please send your registration and abstract as soon as
possible to help us with planning. Send in requests for assistance,
with justification and a draft of an abstract, by April 20. We will let
you know what we can fund by May 15. If you have questions or need a
letter of invitation, please contact t4phage@evergreen.edu .

Most people stay in the modern dorms, where interaction is easy and
each person has an individual room within a suite of 4-6 people with
living room, kitchenette and bathrooms and wireless internet
capability. The dorm and meal charges are included in the registration
fee for Sunday through Thursday nights and arrangements can be made to
arrive here one day early and/or stay one day late. Some participants
prefer to stay in downtown Olympia hotels, near the waterfront and the
Farmer’s Market. Bus service to Evergreen leaves from downtown every 15
minutes and takes about 20 minutes. The closest airport is SeaTac
(Seattle-Tacoma International Airport), shuttle service is available.
The college is located off Highway 101, a few miles from Interstate 5,
the main north-south freeway on the West Coast.

Meeting Goals and Design:
Traditionally, the Evergreen meeting has followed the old Cold Spring Harbor format, with approximately 15-min talks for most people who indicate on the registration form that they want to talk, but with no limits on the length of discussions. In recent years, we have very effectively balanced these with a longer, introductory talk at the start of each session by senior people. Most of the latter have been chosen, but we are still accepting suggestions for a few more of these speakers. Posters are strongly encouraged from everyone -- both as independent presentations with their own abstracts and as a way of letting participants more closely examine the detailed data of those giving talks. They remain up throughout the meeting, in the area where coffee breaks are held, in addition to having some times set aside specifically for posters with the authors accessible. There is a morning session every day and either an afternoon or an evening session, giving opportunities both for tennis, explorations and walks to the beach and for an evening on the town. That time of year is generally beautiful in this area; we have only had to deal with rain once over the 34 years since the Evergreen phage meetings started.

Special features:
The meeting always starts with a Sunday afternoon beach picnic. The first session then begins at 6:30. The formal 'banquet' is traditionally a Native American salmon bake put on by 4 generations of a family from the local Chehalis tribe and the meeting ends on Friday with an optional trip to Mt. Rainier – possibly with another option to Mt. St. Helens -- for those who wish to take part. We may also be able to help you organize a longer mountain trip after the meeting. Please contact us with any questions about the meeting and related topics – t4phage@evergreen.edu.

Time Savers

Print your posters on-site! You can email your poster data and pick up a finished poster when you arrive. Prices for posters are based on the width. Poster-width paper (44 inches) is 70 cents per linear inch, which would cost $21 for a 30-inch wide poster. Price is subject to revision.
